Upper School Student Life

Advisory

The mission of the Advisory Program is to provide further opportunities for upper school students to grow in self-understanding in light of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools. This program provides a structure for one on one meetings between a student and a faculty advisor as well as small group advisory meetings.

The advisor fosters courage and confidence, nurtures, advocates, guides, and facilitates communication between the student, other teachers, other educators, and parents.

The students develop a connection within their advisory group, build academic and interpersonal skills, and come to a greater understanding of their gifts and limitations.

Exchange

Newton Country Day belongs to a national and international network of schools. The Network of Sacred Heart Schools includes 22 schools across the United States (www.sofie.org) and over 200 schools throughout the world.

This network allows students to participate in a variety of programs. Newton Country Day School students have the opportunity to visit another Sacred Heart school for a six week exchange. Our students and their families also play host to students who visit on exchange at Newton. In recent years, schools from Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C., Miami, Omaha, Bogota Colombia, France and Spain have shared an exchange with our students.

Twelfth Night Dance

The twelfth night dance is a holiday semi-formal held on the first Saturday after the New Year. Girls in the Upper School attend and may invite a guest from another school. The event is festive and provides girls with the opportunity to socialize and introduce their guests to each other.

Junior/Senior Prom

Sponsored by the junior class, the prom is held in the spring. The junior class works together to choose a theme and a location for the prom. The evening includes dinner and dancing.

Ring Ceremony

Held in the Spring of each year, Ring Ceremony is one of the most anticipated events in a girl's career at NCDS. The class ring marks a student's transition from junior to senior year.

Alumnae Induction

At the Ring Ceremony, each Senior is inducted into the Sacred Heart Alumnae Association. This active international association includes Sacred Heart alumnae from schools in forty-one countries. Alumnae learn that, wherever they go in the world, they can find alumnae sisters who share an educational heritage founded on the five goals.

Eucharistic Ministry

The Eucharistic Ministry program provides an opportunity for interested juniors and seniors to serve the school community by demonstrating their private devotion and faith in a public way. Students must apply to the program, through which they are trained in the offering of the Eucharist and come together periodically for discussions about faith and the meaning of this sacrament.

Model Mugging

Model Mugging is a nationally-acclaimed self-defense and empowerment course for women. At Newton Country Day School, the course is offered to seniors over seven weeks as part of their weekly Senior Group meetings. The students practice verbal and physical boundary setting skills through role plays and through interaction with a 'mugger' who alternates between playing the role of mugger and coaching students on how to behave self-defensively.
