Ring Ceremony, a time-honored tradition in Sacred Heart schools that honors the junior class, was held in Trinity Chapel on May 13, the Feast of the Ascension. As part of his homily, Reverend Randy Sachs, SJ, said that this feast day calls us to act on the “powerful new life-giving spirit that is a gift of hope meant for us. God challenges us to let this spirit work within us so that we use every opportunity to fill others with hope and life-giving spirit.” Members of the Class of 2011 participated as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and Cantors.
At the conclusion of the liturgy, Head of the Upper School Mrs. Kathleen Scully Hodges introduced the junior class who upon receiving their school rings formally assume the leadership of the Upper School and commit themselves to educate to the building of community as a Christian value.
Sister Rogers congratulated the Class of 2011. “Your school ring carries the symbol of the school. The symbol is surrounded by a laurel wreath, a tradition that hails back to the Greek tradition of crowning the winner of a competition with a laurel wreath. This same tradition was used for many decades on Prize Day in Sacred Heart schools around the world. The winner of an academic prize was crowned with a laurel wreath, a sign that gives glory to God. The laurel wreath you proudly wear on your ring calls you to recognize the glory of God fully alive in each person. May your class ring remind you to model love, forgiveness, and service to others. May you give glory to God by working to become your fullest self, mindful that you are a child of the Sacred Heart.”
For the recessional, the fifth and sixth graders presented the juniors personalized cards and long-stemmed Gerber daisies. Three sets of sisters were part of this moment: Lucia ’17 and Belen Alvarez-Villalonga ’11, Sarah ’16 and Hannah Duehren ’11, and Isabel ’17 and Sofia Thierry ’11. Three alumnae mothers enjoyed a unique moment where they savored their memory of this time-honored tradition with their daughters: Marilyn Martin Parker ’86 and Mackenzie ’11, Polly Reynolds Meckel ’75 and Stephanie ’11, and Kristin Steinkrauss Blount ’82 and Emily ’11. Juniors and their parents enjoyed a beautiful Goûter in the Blue Room.
