Faculty News
In July, History Department Chair Patience Berkman will present a workshop for teachers entitled "World War II in the Pacific: Multiple Perspectives" as part of a Summer Institute sponsored by Primary Source, a curriculum development organization committed to building global understanding. Mrs. Berkman will look at Japan's thirst for oil as an important factor in tensions building up to the war, and will present original materials related to literature and film that will enable teachers to bring an enriched curriculum to their students. The Institute will be held at Showa Boston.
Faculty Appointments 2008-2009
Joining the English Department are Mr. Evan Adair and Ms. Marci Kearney. Mr. Adair earned his B.A. at Hamilton College and his M.A. at University of Virginia. Ms. Kearney taught at B.C. High for several years. She earned her B.A. in English from Skidmore and her J.D. at the University of Denver.
Ms. Rebecca Sen is joining the Science Department. A graduate of Boston College, she earned her Ph.D. from Boston University School of Medicine. She has taught at Emmanuel, Lesley, and Simmons Colleges.
Mr. Christopher Larsen earned a B.S. in mathematics from U. of California, Irvine, an M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham, and M. Div. and Master of Theology degrees from Weston Jesuit School of Theology. He has taught in high schools in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Ms. Crystal Mims is Director of Academic Services. She earned her M. Ed from University of Mass., Boston. Ms. Mims comes to us from the Pembroke School System.
Teaching Fellows
This year’s Teaching Fellows are Ms. Kathleen Donahue and Ms. Abigail Hasebroock. Ms. Donahue graduated from Hamilton College with a B.A. in Chemistry. Ms. Hasebroock earned her B.A. in English from Boston College.
With Gratitude
Our best wishes follow Ms. Geronimo, Ms. O’Brien, Mr. Lewison, Ms. Schwartz, and Mrs. Kennard as they go off to graduate school, move west, and move to new schools.
Mrs. Mary MacBey ’61 is retiring, though we hope she returns for Open House!
Textbook Ordering: Used Titles
In August, students will order their texts for the 2008-2009 school year from www.varsitybooks.com. Varsity Books will have an increased number of used titles available thanks to their recent acquisition of Follett, a used book company. Other ways to acquire used titles: have your Upper School daughter check the used book postings in NCDS News on First-Class; or use the web to search for used titles using the book’s ISBN. For assistance in this process, contact Ms. Pagliocca at (617) 244-4246.
Sacred Heart Cape Cod Reception
