Leadership Workshops and A.P. Classes

Leadership Workshops and A.P. classes are scheduled for Monday, August 25 through Friday, August 29, Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday afternoon, September 3. Any student who is taking an A.P. class or is a member of the Student Government, Honor Committee, Peer Education Forum or is a Committee Head or Team Captain should keep this time free. Later in August we will post the exact times each day that each group will meet.

Fall Trips

Almost immediately after the school year begins, Grades Nine and Eleven will go on fall trips. In the interest of safety, all students must have their medical information and medical permission forms on file with the school in order to go on these trips. Letters outlining the details of these trips are included in this mailing of Newton Notes for freshman and junior parents.

Freshman Orientation will take place on September 10 - 12. This trip is designed to help the girls get to know each other and familiarize themselves with the Goals and Criteria for Sacred Heart Schools. The class moderators and other faculty accompany the girls on their trip. This trip always proves to be a great success and the beginning of many lasting friendships. Students and faculty will stay at the Craigville Retreat Center in Centerville, Massachusetts. The group will depart at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday and return by 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

The Junior Class will visit New York City from September 10 - 12. The trip allows the girls to participate in the Youth Service Opportunity Project and to visit some of the many historical sites connected with the U.S. History curriculum. The group will depart at 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday and return at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Please return your YSOP Medical Forms to Mr. Murphy.

College Guidance

Seniors were given a comprehensive “college guidance packet” before they left for the summer. Included in this were two assignments: complete a draft of the Common Application and complete a draft of a personal statement. We encourage seniors to take both of these assignments very seriously as they want to be well prepared for the very busy and exciting fall that lies ahead.

Senior Group meets once a cycle during first semester. All seniors participate in Senior Group. All aspects of the Admissions Process are discussed during Senior Group. Senior Group keeps seniors “on track” during the fall. Beginning in early September, over 50 colleges will visit Newton to do information sessions. These visits are not interviews. They are intended for students to gather information about colleges and to speak directly with the people who will often be the ones reading their applications. We will give seniors more information on these visits during Senior Group. Check the Naviance Website each week for reminders and weekly updates. Seniors should be updating their Naviance Accounts with the schools that continue to interest them.

Seniors will be given an unofficial copy of their transcripts upon returning to school in September. Any student who needs a copy of a transcript earlier than this should contact Mrs. Bonner in the Academic Office.

Upon returning to school, seniors should schedule a meeting with College Guidance.

Parents may schedule appointments with College Guidance throughout the first semester.

Seniors should register for the October SAT I/II or for the September Administration of the ACT if they are planning on taking one of the tests. Registration deadlines will approach quickly. We encourage students to register early in order to avoid late fees and to secure a convenient site. Fee waivers are available in our office for students who qualify.

Important Dates:
ACT Administration: September 13 • Registration Deadline - August 12
SAT I/II Administration: October 4 • Registration Deadline - September 9

We are available by e-mail over the summer if any student needs to contact us with questions: vyoung@newtoncountryday.org or dpeach@newtoncountryday.org.

Athletics

In order to participate in pre-season sports, Upper School students must have a current physical examination on file with the school nurse, Mrs. Terwilliger. All physical examinations are due August 15. Pre-season will be held the week of August 25. Pre-season will continue on September 4-7. All Upper School students are reminded that they should report to pre-season in shape!

This fall we will offer a novice crew program that will begin September 8. This is a five day commitment. Practice times will be posted in September Newton Notes.

My deep thanks to you for the notes and cards sent to me at the time of my
mother’s death. My mother loved her own Sacred Heart education, so you
may be sure she is giving God advice on how we can advance the mission
here! Your prayers are a great consolation to me and my family.
