Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards

Fifteen Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart student works of art received 2012 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. Seven winning entries were awarded a prestigious Gold Key or Silver Key and will be on display for public viewing at the Massachusetts State Transportation Building in Boston. This 62nd annual event is distinguished as the most competitive in the history of the Scholastic Art Awards. More than 14,000 individual works of art were juried by teams of Massachusetts artists and retired art educators.


 

S. Kelleher ’16L. Poppenhagen ’12, and B. Seiler ’12 are Gold Key winners. Kelleher and Seiler won Gold Keys in the Mixed Media category for works titled “Design Dance” and “Looking Out the Window at Technology,” respectively. Poppenhagen won a Gold Key in the Design Category for her entry titled “Peacock Coffee.”

Silver Key Award winners are M. Gilligan ’16 for her Mixed Media entry “The Machine”, I. Marquardt ’12 for her work in Printmaking titled “Rock Star”, E. McLaughlin ’15 for her Sculpture “Mardi Gras”, and B. Seiler ’12 for her Drawing “Fear of Fire”.

 

Gold Key and Silver Key works will be on exhibit at the Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, from February 13 to April 20, from 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday) and 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m. (holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays). Gold Key and Silver Key recipients will be recognized at the March 11, 2012 Student Award Ceremonies at John Hancock Hall, Boston. Gold Key works continue on to New York for national judging in their respective age groups and categories.

Honorable Mention Scholastic Art Award category winners are:

for Drawing: B. Seiler ’12 for “Technology World”
for Mixed Media: E. Erler ’16 for "Dreams” and M. Eugene ’16 for “Circles”,
for Painting: C. Ora ’16 for “Acrylic” and K. Saunders ’12 for “Couple”,
for Photography: L. Hillerich ’12 for “Curtain Screen”, and for “Fire Breather”
and K. Saunders ’12 for “Sadness.”
for Printmaking: I. Marquardt ’12

To enter the competition, a student must be nominated by his and her respective art teacher. Newton Country Day art teachers Visual Arts Department Chair Robert MurrellMr.Patrick Hadfield, and Ms. Mary Marley nominated the students. “The girls did a fine job continuing the tradition of producing great artwork and garnering recognition for themselves and for Newton Country Day School. It is a pleasure to work with them,” says Mr. Murrell.

The winning Newton Country Day artists are currently enrolled in the Grade 8 Art and Religion program, Grade 9 Art I, Introduction to Digital Photography, the Art IV program, and AP Art – as first and second year students.

Students in grades 7-12 enrolled in Massachusetts public, private, and parochial schools submitted works in categories of: digital art, painting, film and animation, drawing, fashion, ceramics and glass, photography, jewelry, mixed media, printmaking, comic art, design, architecture, and sculpture to the highly selective competition. Approximately 3,000 submissions were voted awards.


 

Newton Country Day will host a spring exhibit that will include the many student works submitted to the 2012 Scholastic Art Awards competition. The art works will be displayed outside the school library at the lower level. Do stop by to admire and enjoy!
