The 20th annual spring SISAL (Small Independent School Art League) juried art show took place at Dedham Country Day School. Of the 645 submissions, 433 works were selected for exhibition, including thirty-one pieces from Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. Eleven Newton Country Day works won awards and another twenty-one student works across ten categories were selected for display.
Winners in the Upper School Division (grades 10-12) are E. Mulroy ’12 with a Second Place for “Self Portrait” done in Pastel, Crayon, Charcoal Drawing; L. Hillerich ’12 with a Third Place for “Morning Window Curtain” in Digital Photo: Black & White or Color; and I. Marquardt ’12 with Honorable Mention for “Rock Star” in the Printmaking category.
In the Lower School Division (grades 7-9), First Place winners are J. Stevenson ’15 for “JB” in Oil Painting and E. Ix ’15 for “Starland” in Fiber Arts. Second Place winners are O. Corcoran ’15 for “Joey” in Oil Painting, C. Neckermann ’15 for “Still Life with Line Sets” in Ink Drawing, E. Ix ’15 for “Is This Seat Taken” in Mixed Media, and I. Mongeau ’15 for “Spilled Paint” in Fiber Arts. Third Place honors were awarded to E. McLaughlin ’15 for “Ann Marie” in Oil Painting and H. Batchelder ’15 for “Still Life with Line Sets” in the Ink Drawing category.

More than thirty schools are members in the coalition that supports SISAL. Participating schools in the 2012 SISAL competition include: Arlington School, Bancroft, Brimmer & May, Cape Cod Academy, Carroll School, Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall, Dexter-Southfield Schools, Dedham Country Day, Falmouth Academy, Fenn School, Fessenden School, Lincoln School, Newton Country Day, Portsmouth Abbey, Rivers, Roxbury Latin, Victor School, and Winsor.
A reception and awards ceremony for winning works took place on Sunday, April 29. Newton Country Day art teachers, Department Chair Mr. Robert Murrell, Mr. Patrick Hadfield, and Ms. Mary Marley are planning a spring exhibition of the SISAL and Scholastic Art student artwork. Additionally, Ms. Marley’s eighth grade class will have a Religion/Art exhibit titled “Under the Shadow” on Wednesday, May 15 in the Blue Room, the Solarium, and the Gold Room. Students will present their work at a 1:00-2:00 p.m. reception. The art work will remain on display through Friday. May 17. Do stop by to view the exhibits.
