Summer Enrichment in the Sciences

The Newton Country Day School Science Department encourages students to explore summer science enrichment programs. Upper School students speak highly of their summer 2009 science activities. L. Grimes ’10 took a two-week psychology course at Boston University that included learning about infectious diseases. L. Kerwin ’10 participated in a six-week research internship program in Biochemistry at Boston University and worked on a project involving protein purification and crystallization. J. McKenna ’10 traveled to the University of Pennsylvania where she participated in six weeks of scientific research in the genetics area. M. Sargis ’10 participated in the National Student Leadership Conference for Advanced Medicine and Healthcare. At the Conference she dissected a cat and watched a live open-heart surgery. M. Berkeley ’11 worked on the Cardiac floor at Boston Children’s Hospital. S. Carrera ’11 spent six weeks performing research and entering data at the Schepen’s Eye Research Institute, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. A. Dickerson ’11 worked in the sickle cell area at Boston Medical Center. A. Keane ’12 traveled to San Francisco for a one week project with the National Park Services. M. Mitchell ’12 worked in a forensic lab in the Boston Police Headquarters Lab.

The Newton Country Day School Library Resource Center has a wealth of information on science enrichment programs and internships as well as program offerings in other academic arenas, community service, and national and international travel. Many programs have student evaluations from previous years. Check it out!
