L. Barrett ’10 won a prestigious Gold Key Award at the 60th annual Scholastic Art Awards for her work in the photography category titled “Train Platform.” Barrett will be honored with a Gold Key at the February 14 Student Award Ceremonies at John Hancock Hall. Barrett’s work and other individual pieces receiving a Gold Key in Massachusetts continue on to New York for national judging in their respective age group and category.

Middle School artists K. McCabe ’14 and C. Robles-Gil ’14 won Honorable Mention Awards. McCabe’s entry is an autobiographical drawing and Robles-Gil’s work also is an autobiographical drawing which she titled “ME.”

Students in grades 7-12 enrolled in Massachusetts public, private, and parochial schools submitted paintings, film, apparel, photography, jewelry, mixed media, prints, and sculptures to the highly selective competition. This year is distinguished as the most competitive in the history of the Scholastic Art Awards. More than 10,000 individual works of art were juried by teams of Massachusetts retired art educators and artists. Approximately 2,000 submissions were voted awards. Gold Key and Silver Key works are displayed at the Massachusetts State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza from February 1 to March 20, from 12:00 noon - 5:00 p.m.

To enter the competition, a student must be nominated by his and her respective art teacher. Newton Country Day art teachers Department Chair Robert Murrell and Patrick Hadfield nominated the students.

Newton Country Day will host an exhibit that includes the 30 student works submitted to the 2010 Scholastic Art Awards competition. The exhibit will include the Honorable Mention works of art and a copy of the Gold Key work. The art works will be displayed outside the school library at the lower level. Do stop by to admire and enjoy!
