Fall Athletic Season Capped off with Players, Coaches of the Year
The exciting fall athletic season concluded with Newton’s Varsity Volleyball team capturing the league title, two teams reaching the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC)  tournament, two EIL Players of the Year, and two EIL Coaches of the Year.

Upper School
Varsity Volleyball
Eastern Independent League Regular Season and Tournament Champions
Overall Record: 15-5, EIL Record: 12-0

Varsity Volleyball placed first in the EIL and won the EIL tournament for the second consecutive year, defeating Portsmouth Abbey in the championship game. The team earned the #4 seed in the New England Tournament, where they faced and defeated Middlesex School 3-0. NCDS advanced to the semifinal game, where the team put up a very impressive fight, coming back from 0-2 deficit to force a 5th match but eventually falling 3-2 to the undefeated King School. Varsity Head Coach Preston Yong was named EIL Coach of the Year. The team was also honored with the NEPSAC Sportsmanship Award as the team that "best embodied integrity and sportsmanship while positively representing the game of volleyball and NEPSAC during the Fall 2022 season."

Varsity Field Hockey

Overall Record: 15-4, EIL Record: 13-2

Varsity Field Hockey placed 2nd in the EIL and earned the #2 seed in the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Class C Tournament. The team defeated league rival Winsor 1-0 in overtime in the quarterfinal but fell 3-2 in another overtime game to New Hampton School in the semifinal. Scoring 63 goals while only giving up 9 goals the entire season, the team gave up the fewest goals in all of New England. Varsity Head Coach, and Newton Athletic Director, Kimberly Southall was named EIL Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Captain J. Bresnahan ’23 received Player of the Year distinction, also for the second year in a row.

Varsity Soccer

Overall Record: 7-6-2, EIL Record: 5-4-1

As a team, Varsity Soccer scored 46 goals, the fourth most goals scored in 20 years, and allowed only 23 goals, the fourth fewest in 20 years. Highlights included a comeback 3-3 tie at our Homecoming, and a shorthanded 1-0 victory under the lights at Dana Hall at their Homecoming. All 20 players registered either a goal or an assist over the course of the season.

Varsity Cross Country

Despite having some runners sidelined, the team raced their hearts out at the EIL Championship meet in early November, placing an impressive third behind Winsor and Pingree and defeating seven other schools. Two runners placed in the top 15 of the race, earning all-league distinction.

Varsity Crew
In the CRI Fall Classic, Newton's boats placed substantially higher than last fall. At the Textile River Regatta, Crew had a strong showing with three of four boats placing in the top half of their events. To cap off the fall, the top experienced athletes raced the Women's Junior 8+ event at the Head of the Charles.

JV Field Hockey
The JV Field Hockey team scored 11 goals with six different goal scorers. Two of their most exciting games were vs. Cambridge School of Weston; one was a shutout and the other resulted in a 3-1 victory.

JV Soccer
Record: 5-4-3

With an organized defense, all-out effort, and first rate goalkeeping, JV soccer played one of their best defensive games of the season against BB&N, ending in a 1-1 draw. Two memorable games include a 2-0 win over Dexter Southfield and a 6-3 win over Milton Academy.

JV Volleyball
Record: 9-6

All members of the JV Volleyball team recorded at least one kill each through the season, and many of the opposing coaches complimented the team on their strong serves. Two memorable games were against Winsor and BB&N. In both, the team kept a positive energy and good momentum, defeating their opponents in just two sets.
