Families and Students Participate in Service Ahead of Thanksgiving
Leading up to Thanksgiving, the Parents’ Association Service Committee partnered with two organizations in our community: the YMCA of Greater Boston and Project Care & Concern. The committee hosted a gift card drive and a teenage girl clothing drive.
According to the organizations, gift cards make the best gift at Thanksgiving as they allow families to choose their own menu for the holiday. With the goal of helping 200 families with their Thanksgiving meal, Newton families were asked to donate gift cards to Target or Stop & Shop. Through the generosity of Newton families, the Service Committee collected more than 260 gift cards for Sister Joyce at Project Care and Concern and the YMCA of Greater Boston. Students created homemade "Thankful Cards" to accompany the gift cards.
Our community also donated 30 bags of clothing for teenage girls to the YMCA. Many of our parents volunteered their time to sort, organize, and deliver the clothing. The school is grateful to Joanne Gomes '08, Senior Association Director of Community Hub Schools, for partnering with us on the clothing drive.
On Saturday, November 19, Grade 9 girls baked 50 apple pies to donate to Community Servings' Pie in the Sky fundraiser. Pie proceeds help Community Servings provide healthy meals to critically ill and homebound people in Massachusetts. This service project provides an opportunity for students to live Goal III and grow new friendships during this season of giving thanks.
