Girls Participate in Service During Advent Season
On December 9, a group of Upper School students volunteered at the Family Promise Metrowest Holiday Party. The festive gathering for families experiencing homelessness included activities, food, and a sing-along. “I loved volunteering at the Family Promise Holiday Party and found it to be an enriching experience,” said G. Dailey ’19. “Doing crafts, singing songs, and chatting with families are simple yet meaningful ways to bring joy during this busy season.”

On Sunday, December 16, more than 40 Upper School girls volunteered at the annual Christmas in the City party at the Boston Convention Center for children and families also impacted by homelessness. In addition to live entertainment, games, and activities, the afternoon offers health screenings, flu shots, and haircuts. “The holiday season is a time to be thankful for what we have and to give back to the local community,” commented Service Committee co-head J. Mulvey ’19. “Participating in Christmas in the City allows us to spread happiness and holiday spirit to less fortunate families in the greater Boston area.”

In their advisory and TAG groups, girls collected food and gifts to donate to Christmas Baskets benefitting low-income families who live at Harbor Point in Dorchester. Sr. Joyce McMullin of Project Care and Concern has been our partner in this service for more than 25 years. Each group was responsible for filling their basket with food and gifts for a specific family. After completing a questionnaire about poverty, advisory groups held discussions about how families may end up impacted by homelessness and hunger. With the help of Newton Country Day parents, the Christmas Baskets, benefitting 60 families, were on Saturday, December 15.
