Mary Thompson '81 Announced as 2025 Commencement Speaker

Alumna Mary Thompson '81 will deliver the Commencement address at Newton Country Day's 145th Commencement ceremony on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

A 1981 graduate of Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Mary Thompson holds a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University.

For most of her career, Thompson worked as a financial journalist, starting as a print reporter for Bloomberg News in 1991. The next year she moved to Bloomberg Radio and Television reporting on the  stock market and anchoring special coverage of Federal Reserve meetings.

In 2000, Thompson joined CNBC as a general assignment reporter. Over the next 16 years she covered, among other things, the banking and insurance industries, executive compensation and disasters both manmade and natural, including the 2008 financial crisis, Hurricane Katrina, and the mutual fund industry's market-timing scandal. She created, reported, and wrote the ongoing CNBC series, “Where the Jobs Are” and CNBC’s digi-documentary “The Bitcoin Uprising.” Her work appeared on other NBC properties, including NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, and MSNBC.

During her time at CNBC, Thompson received the prestigious Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism for her coverage of the Bernard Madoff scandal. In 2005, she received a National Headliner Award for her reporting on price fixing in the insurance industry.

In 2017, she joined G100 to co-create an executive education program for corporate directors. She currently works as an advisor and moderator to World 50’s corporate director program.
