Middle School Holds Book Drive
Middle School co-presidents S. Beaver ’25 and N. Joyce ’25 knew they wanted to start the school year with a service opportunity for the entire Middle School. After learning about Storytime Crafts, the duo organized a book drive to benefit children in the Boston area.

Storytime Crafts is a nonprofit organization with a grassroots literacy initiative dedicated to creating diverse book-rich environments for children that promotes the joy of reading. It was founded with the goal of uniting communities to encourage inclusive childhood literacy opportunities. Storytime Crafts is dedicated to amplifying the voices and stories of diverse children's authors and directing literacy resources throughout communities.

“We both thought that a book drive to collect culturally rich children's books could be a way to spread awareness of the social injustices in our world today,” said Joyce. “Donating books to Storytime Crafts and helping my community is important because I know that I am making a difference in the lives of children who do not have as much as I do. It is something that helps those most in need and makes me happy knowing that I am doing something to help the world become a better place.”

To encourage their classmates to participate in the drive, Beaver and Joyce made flyers that hung in Middle School class spaces with information about Storytime Crafts and its mission to promote literacy through art, kindness, and community. They also created a video explaining the details of the book drive, as well as a Google document with examples of the types of books they were collecting with links to purchase the books.

On the last day of the book drive, the collection bins were overflowing with donations. Last week, Joyce delivered more than 150 collected books to Storytime Crafts.

“It was amazing to see how Storytime Crafts helped to spread awareness to our Middle School community, and at the same time is soon going to help so many children learn to read and build confidence in themselves” Joyce concluded.
