Newton Country Day Begins its 140th Academic Year

The day brought 79 new students to NCDS; a group of bright, enthusiastic girls eager to challenge themselves, take risks, and forge new friendships. Girls participated in orientation activities, ice breaker games, and tours of the school. This year’s student body, representing nearly 50 cities and towns in Massachusetts, will focus as a community on Sacred Heart Goal III: a social awareness that impels to action.

On Saturday, September 7, Varsity athletic teams traveled to Connecticut to Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich for the 12th annual Heart Connection, a day that connects the Network of Sacred Heart schools in athletic competition. The event also illustrates Goal IV: the building of community as a Christian value.

This week girls participate in traditions that included the all-school Mass of the Holy Spirit and goûter. During is homily, Reverend Terry Devino, SJ said “Your community is already spirit-filled. How then will you keep the spirit alive this year? That is only for you to answer. Only you will know this by recognizing the moments when you encounter the spirit of God, and more importantly, when you take the time to acknowledge how you have been the spirit and how you have shared that spirit with and for one another. The school year awaits you. The Holy Spirit of God awaits your generosity and your willingness to receive the spirit and your willingness to give it away. You have something different here something unique, something holy, and it is palpable. It’s a palpable sense of one another’s goodness, generosity, and holiness. This community is filled with spirit.”

Starting tomorrow, Upper School girls travel for class retreats and field trips, the Class of 2023 participates in a day of service, and seniors take part in an Advocacy Day before returning to their regular class schedules.
