Newton Country Day Celebrates the Conclusion of an Exciting Winter Season

Newton Country Day School celebrated the conclusion of another exciting, competitive winter season. Students were recognized for their athletic accomplishments at the Winter Athletic Awards earlier this month.

The NCDS SuperFan Award is awarded to a student who is seen attending a variety of school events and increasing fan involvement through leadership, sportsmanship, and sheer spirit for the Blue and Silver. This season’s SuperFan Award goes to Casandra Ortiz Gonzalez ‘28!

Upper School

Varsity Basketball
Overall Record: 8-11; EIL Record: 7-8

Varsity Basketball’s improvements over last season included not only their record, but also their points scored per game as well as points allowed, often holding teams well under their season average. Highlights included: attending the Turkey Tip-Off at Brandeis University for the first time; hosting the #2 ranked team in Class A and fellow Network school, Sacred Heart Greenwich; a double-digit comeback win against Winsor; winning a thriller at the #3 ranked LCA 74-68, and a big win on Senior Night beating Dana Hall for the first time in three years.

JV Basketball
Record: 13-3

JV Basketball had an excellent season, with all players experiencing tremendous growth in their basketball skills. Highlights included starting the season winning 10 of the first 11 games, multiple fourth quarter comebacks from double-digit deficits, two overtime wins against Milton and Portsmouth Abbey, and holding Dana Hall to only 5 points in the first half of the team's final game. Every player scored in two different games this season.

Varsity Squash
Overall Record: 6-13

Varsity Squash improved during their regular season with 2 more wins than last year. The resilient team traveled to Philadelphia for their first time at nationals and won 2 out of 4 matches, finishing 6th in their division. New Englands, which was played out in Pomfret, CT also proved to be quite a challenge with all matches finishing 3-4 or 4-3, with the final match vs. St. Luke’s resulting in a 4-3 win.

Varsity Ice Hockey
Overall Record: 5-15-1, EIL Record: 2-4

Varsity Ice Hockey suffered 4 season-ending injuries and played half of the season with 11 or 12 skaters, the other half with only 9 or 10 skaters for only 61% of games with a full roster of 18. Despite playing with a depleted roster, the team worked hard each game, persevered through adversity, and maintained a positive attitude.

Varsity Dance Team
The Dance Team worked hard all season to improve their technique, expand their movement vocabulary, and perfect two challenging dances. The team performed at several school events and at the StarQuest Dance Competition, where both dances placed first in their categories, receiving high scores for being technically strong and well-rehearsed. The team bids farewell to a large senior group of nine, many of whom have been part of the team since 9th grade.

Middle School

A Basketball
Record: 15-10

Highlights from the season included earning 3rd place in the annual tournament, going 4-1 overall, and showing grit and determination. In the last week of the season the team earned their final three wins; against BBN, a hard fought game vs Thayer, and an entertaining game at Winsor.

B1 Basketball
Record: 11-5

B1 Basketball had a great season this winter, finishing the season with a seven-game winning streak. Each member of the team made progress throughout the season, continuously improving at each practice and displaying sportsmanship and showing what it means to be a good teammate.

Ice Hockey
Record: 6-7
The Middle School Ice Hockey team had 10 new players and 4 veteran players. The team played some of the top schools around, with every player scoring a goal. The team opened the season by beating Dexter Southfield and ended the season defeating Thayer in a true storybook ending.

Squash
Record: 1-10

Despite the season’s record, the Middle School Squash team, which had more than half of its team with less than a year’s experience in squash, demonstrated sportsmanship, dedication, and personal improvement. A season highlight was a match against Winsor, which required the top 8 players to play a 3/5 match format rather than the normal 2/3 match format. 3 players succeeded in picking up 1 game in their match against the most competitive team in the league.
