Newton Country Day Celebrates Spring Athletic Achievements

Newton Country Day celebrated the conclusion of another exciting and competitive season, honoring students for their athletic accomplishments at the Spring Sports Awards, including the Varsity Softball team being named EIL Tournament Champions.

Upper School

Varsity Golf
Team Record: 3-2
The season concluded with four team members competing in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Championships, where they represented the school against golfers from across New England. The coaches praised the team’s positive attitude, hard work, and dedication to the game throughout the season.

Coaches’ Award: Ruari Montague ‘29

Varsity Crew
The Crew team had a strong spring season, with notable victories against Sacred Heart Greenwich, Hopkins School, and Dexter Southfield. The team qualified two boats for the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Regatta this year.

Varsity Tennis
Team Record: 6-3
The team enjoyed a successful season earning numerous wins, including a victory over Winsor for the first time since 2018. Throughout the spring, the team consistently supported each other, and brought energy, cheering, and encouragement to every match.

JV Tennis
Team Record: 2-2-1
The team showed growth, resilience, and team spirit throughout the season. On the court, the players worked hard on serves, match play, doubles positioning, and getting more comfortable at the net.

Varsity Lacrosse 
Team Record: 5-6
The team demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the spring season, overcoming significant player injuries. Over their 12 games, 14 players scored 124 goals, the goalies had a combined 82 saves, recovered 247 ground balls, and had 90 draw controls. The team ended with a 4-3 record in the EIL.

JV Lacrosse 
Team Record: 5-1-1
The team had a successful season demonstrating growth, confidence, and teamwork. They embraced new challenges and supported each other. The coaches praised the team’s resilience, positive energy, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones.

Varsity Softball
Team Record: 12-4
The softball team enjoyed a standout season, concluding with a EIL tournament championship title. They outscored their opponents 167 to 96, had a team batting average of .427, and had impressive wins over Thayer, Rivers, Portsmouth Abbey, and Dana Hall.

Varsity Track and Field
In its third season, the track and field team has made major strides, nearly doubling in team size and competing in more events. The team earned multiple victories, set numerous school records, and finished fifth at the EIL Championship with fifteen medals and a new EIL record in the 300 hurdles.

Tennis

The team had a fun season of building community and learning new skills, despite a rainy season. Highlights include a tiebreaker win against Rivers and a strong performance in singles against Nashoba Brooks.

A Lacrosse 
Team Record: 5-5
The team had a strong season, showing competitiveness, teamwork, and heart throughout every game. Notable wins include games against BB&N, Windsor, and Dana Hall. Players improved each week and competed as a unified, supportive team.

Team Record 5-4-1
The MS B lacrosse season was about growth, teamwork, resilience, and having fun together. They showed steady improvement and built a strong culture of support. They had a notable win against Fay, where the team showed how much they improved on their skills.

Softball
Team Record: 6-3
Finishing the season 6-3, the softball team showed what growth, teamwork, and perseverance can look like. Season highlights include wins against Dexter Southfield, Dana Hall, and Fay. The season was defined by leadership, effort, and a positive team culture.

Novice Crew
The inaugural Grade 8 novice rowing team had a strong first season, beginning with foundational training. The team quickly built skills, confidence, and teamwork and gained valuable race experience against Winsor. Throughout the season they showed enthusiasm, perseverance, and strong camaraderie.
