Newton Country Day Recognizes Winter Sports Achievements

Newton Country Day celebrated the conclusion of another exciting and competitive winter season, honoring students for their athletic accomplishments at the Winter Sports Awards. The community also celebrated Varsity Ice Hockey Coach Gus Means, who was named the 2026 Eastern Independent League Coach of the Year and is retiring this year after a decade of coaching the Varsity Ice Hockey team.

The NCDS SuperFan Award is awarded to a student and a faculty member who have been seen attending a variety of school events and increasing fan involvement through leadership, sportsmanship, and sheer spirit for the Blue and Silver. This season’s SuperFan Award goes to: Ms. Hurley and Grace Molinsky ‘26.

Upper School

Varsity Ice Hockey 
Record: 5-12-2

The team ended the season finishing fourth in the EIL and showing significant growth from last year. Season highlights include wins over Winsor, Pingree, and Greenwich Country Day. The team also tied four games, losing two in overtime, and lost many games only by a single goal. The team celebrated strong leadership from the seniors, dedicated team managers, and unwavering support from their families.

Varsity Basketball 
Record: 3-18

The team’s resilience, joy, and chemistry defined the season, creating memories that will last beyond the season. A shining moment for the team was their exciting overtime win against Dana Hall at the Winter White Out. With strong momentum from the team’s returners and a legacy left by this year’s seniors, the future of the NCDS basketball program is bright.

JV Basketball 
Record: 10-3

Finishing the season with an impressive 10-3 record, the JV Basketball team showed strong dedication, teamwork, and consistent growth. The coaches are proud of the team’s effort, positive attitude, and the way they represented NCDS throughout the season.

Varsity Squash 
Record: 5-11

Highlights included wins over Brookline High School and Moses Brown School, as well as an impressive victory of the #3 seed in the U.S. High School Squash Nationals, after entering as the #14 seed. With strong leadership, resilience, and a roster that included many young players, the team proved that the future of the program is bright.

Varsity Dance Team 

The Varsity Dance team brought energy, passion, and a strong work ethic to every practice and performance this season. Highlights include performing at the Winter White Out and the End of Season Showcase, where the team demonstrated their versatility through a variety of dance styles. Their enthusiasm and dedication made for a memorable season.

Middle School

A Basketball
Record: 17-4

The team had an outstanding season, setting a new record with 809 points scored. Highlights include strong wins over Milton, Dana Hall, and Nobles, as well as a second-place finish in the NCDS basketball tournament. Beyond the results, the team stood out for their energy, resilience, and the way they supported one another throughout the season.

B1 Basketball
Record: 8-7

The B1 Basketball team had a strong season filled with exciting, close games and several double-digit wins, finishing with a winning record. A highlight was two games where every player scored a basket, showcasing the team’s shared effort and contributions. Most importantly, the team lived out the Five Goals on the court and had plenty of fun throughout the season.

B2 Basketball
Record: 8-5

With a deep and energetic roster, the team had a lively and memorable season, finishing with an impressive 8-5 record and a three-game winning streak to end the season. Highlights include a comeback win against Nashoba Brooks, a high-scoring Winter White Out game, and a final home victory over Winsor. Throughout the season, players improved their skills, gained confidence taking shots, and grew as teammates.

Squash
Record: 2-8

The season was defined by growth, resilience, and teamwork as the players steadily improved. A highlight of the season was a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Dexter Southfield and a 8-0 win over Dedham Country Day to close out the season. Throughout the winter, the team built confidence, honed their skills, and laid a strong foundation for future success.

Skills Basketball 

The Skills Basketball squad made impressive strides throughout the season. They learned every position and sharpened their fundamental skills, showing growth and confidence, strengthening their love for the sport and teamwork.

Record: 9-3

The Middle School Ice Hockey team wrapped up their winning season with a lot of hard work, commitment, and courage. The group brought great energy to every practice and game, building strong team chemistry along the way. It was a season defined by effort, enthusiasm, and a love of playing hockey together.
