Newton's Latinx Affinity Group Joins Local Schools for Fundraiser
Newton’s Latinx affinity group OLAS (Organization of Latin American Students), in partnership with Latinx groups at The Winsor School, Dana Hall School, The Roxbury Latin School, and Fontbonne Academy, launched a t-shirt fundraiser, “Unidos por Centroamérica.”

Unidos por Centroamérica (translated to United for Central America) is raising money for the non-profit organization Food for the Poor, which is providing emergency relief for Central America following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Eta and Iota.

“The fundraiser came together through the friendships we have created with other Latinx students across various independent schools,” said OLAS co-heads S. Henao ’21 and A. Guzman ’21. “We wanted to support a cause that we all felt passionate about and thought we could help advocate for at our schools. As we researched as a group what organization we would like to donate to, we discovered Food for the Poor. We fell in love with their mission and plan for hurricane relief through training and agricultural sustainability in countries such as Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.”

The t-shirt, designed by a junior from Winsor, highlights Central America's countries, includes the national flower of Nicaragua, and hands that represent unity.

“We do not have a specific fundraising goal,” Henao and Guzman added. “Our main focus is to create awareness about the topic. Over the years, we have learned the importance of service and bringing light to topics that we feel are important.”

If students are interested in contributing to the fundraiser, they should email Henao or Guzman.
