Service Committee Raises Money for Sacred Heart Schools in Uganda
In early spring, the Service Committee organized three fundraisers to raise money for our Sacred Heart sister schools in Uganda. Between two jeans days, a bake sale, and contributions from the Economics Committee, over $4,000 was raised to fund scholarships at these schools. The initiatives were led by Service Committee co-heads K. Erler ’21 and C. Linton ’21.

This year’s bake sale took on a new form, with pre-orders and cohort drop-offs designed to ensure safety.

“We had a lot of support from our committee moderator Ms. Ruane and Director of Dining Services Mr. Connor to make sure this bake sale was safe,” explained Linton. “Service Committee members baked for a cohort in their grade to limit interaction. Each girl wore a mask while baking. Committee members left the baked goods outside of the assigned cohort so that there would be no interaction between separate cohorts.”

Linton and Erler are very happy with how successful the fundraisers and outreach has been, and both are grateful to the members of the Economics Committee for their significant contribution to the fundraiser for the schools in Uganda.

Service Committee members are also maintaining the relationship that Newton Country Day has with Hearth, a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly, by writing letters to residents.

“We received a very positive response from a Hearth volunteer, who said the residents love hearing from everyone and that the cards are a great way to connect with the community,” Linton added. “Our committee members are dedicated to educating their peers and helping people.”
