Sophomores Earn Commendation at Harvard Model UN Conference
Nineteen Upper School students attended the Harvard Model UN Conference (HMUN) January 30-February 2. At the conclusion of the conference, second year committee members C. Kelley ’22 and E. Lesher ’22 received a Diplomatic Commendation for their work in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on the topic of Education Reform.

The four-day UN simulation asks delegates to step into the role of international decision makers, negotiate on major international crises, and craft innovative policy solutions. Partners Kelly and Lesher, representing Brazil, received the commendation for their ability to negotiate with a variety of people, participate actively, and present information in a professional manner.

“Being a part of Model UN and attending the HMUN conference is a unique and valuable experience,” said Lesher. “It gives us the opportunity to meet and collaborate with people from all over the world, and we learned a lot both in and out of committee sessions.”

“The conference was a great experience for me and my partner to apply what we have learned at school,” added Kelley. “I learned so much about collaboration and communication, whether it be thinking on my feet during a debate or talking to people from around the world about their perspectives.”

HMUN attracted more than 4,000 student delegates and faculty advisors representing high schools from over 57 countries.
