Winter Athletic Awards and Wrap Up

Newton Country Day’s Middle and Upper School winter athletic teams celebrated the conclusion of their seasons with assemblies to recognize girls for their achievements.

Upper School
Varsity Basketball
Record:
9-8, EIL: 6-6
-First winning season in 10 years
-First time in six years the program defeated Portsmouth Abbey twice 
-Out-rebounded opponents in 15 of 17 games, out-rebounded opponents by 160 total rebounds
-Two players with career-highs: S. Ryan ’21-25 points vs. Montrose, K. Kane ’20-17 points vs. Winsor

Most Improved Player: J. Mulvey ’23
Coaches’ Award: G. Ryan ’20
EIL All-League: S. Ryan ’21
EIL Honorable Mention: Kane
NEPSAC Class C All-Star: S. Ryan ’21

Junior Varsity Basketball
Record:
14-2, Undefeated in the EIL
-All 12 players contributed points. Seven games where more than eight players scored
-Held opponents to less than 20 points in eight games
-Out-scored their our opponents: 637-338

Varsity Dance
Emmanuel College Competition:
1st for Jazz, 2nd for Pom
Starbound Competition: Highest Score in division for Jazz, High Gold for Contemporary
Starquest Competition: Platinum and 2nd in category for Jazz, High Gold and 1st in category for Contemporary 

Most Valuable Dancer: H. Thompson ’20
Most Improved Dancer: A. McKay ’22
Coaches’ Award: E. Lesher ’21
2020-21 Captains: P. Derenzo ’21 and R. Sullivan ’21

Varsity Ice Hockey
-Highlights include the comeback vs.Greenwich Academy. Team was down 3-0 after the first period but managed to tie them over the next two periods 1-1.
-Most exciting game was their overtime win at Winsor

Most Improved Player: E. Wakakuwa ’20
Coaches’ Award: O. Winchenbaugh ’21
EIL All-League: Matthews

Varsity Squash
Record: 10-3, EIL: 5-3 (2nd place)
-NEPSAC Class D Champions for the first time
-At NEPSAC Tournament individually: five first places, a third place, and a fifth place

Most Improved Player: C. Morey ’20
Coaches’ Award: E. Figge ’21
EIL All-League: J. Love ’21 and Odegard

Middle School
A Basketball
Record:
14-3
-4-1 in games decided by four points or less 
-Highlight was the second game vs. Winsor. After losing to them by two points two weeks prior, the girls worked hard in practice and the result was a convincing 39-17 win

Most Improved Player: G. Hernandez ’24
Coaches’ Award: A. Young ’24

B Basketball
Record:
9-8
-Played well against a number of A level teams
-Team was down to Thayer by one point with 11 seconds left. Thayer had the ball, one of our guards stole the ball, drove the court, faked, shot and scored to win by 1. 
-Everyone scored during the season

Most Valuable Player: A. Freyermuth ’26
Most Improved Player: N. Eickenhorst ’24
Coaches’ Award: S. Straub ’24

B2 Basketball
-Highlights were victories against Winsor. Throughout the season the team worked on their communication skills which had a direct impact on these games.

Coaches’ Award: Y. Song ’26

Ice Hockey
Record:
8-5 
-The team’s best hockey was always played against their toughest opponents 
-The last game of the season was against Park. The team won 10-3 with seven different girls scoring goals. 

Most Valuable Player: C. McCarthy ’24
Most Improved Player: P. Burke ’24
Coaches’ Award: L. Pergola ’25

Squash
-This was the program’s first year practicing everyday and playing a full schedule
-All 17 girls who played against Nashoba Brooks showed consistency in their serves and had competitive rallies. The team fought hard and won 9-8.

Most Improved: F. Jobson ’25
Coaches’ Award: M. Murphy ’24
