Intertwining Vines
An Athletics Strategic Game Plan

"I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit."
- John 15:5

Athletics at Newton Country Day is more than competition—it is Formation. Truly, Falcon sport programs aspire to be not just formational, but Fiercely competitive. If we succeed in these two goals, our student-athletes will have Fun.
Like the VINES that grow strong through connection and care, our athletics program intertwines with the Sacred Heart mission to cultivate young women of character, community, Courage, and Confidence. Following a comprehensive audit conducted in Summer/Fall 2024 involving perspectives from all areas of our community, we are proud to share this strategic vision that honors our tradition, responds to student and community voices, and boldly charts a future of growth, excellence, and spirit.

Vision
To build a high-quality, mission-aligned, and inclusive athletic program that nurtures personal growth, fosters community, and prepares student-athletes to thrive on and off the field with Courage and Confidence.
Core Values
INTERTWINING VINES:
- Courage – Fostering resilience and self-advocacy through competition and challenge.
- Confidence – Empowering athletes to take risks, fail forward, and grow.
- Formational – Emphasizing the role of sport in shaping character, faith, and leadership.
- Fun – Celebrating the joy of play, team spirit, and the love of the game.
- Fierce – Competing with passion, ambition, and a relentless pursuit of team and personal success.

Strategic Priorities & Action Plans
Schools of the Sacred Heart are guided by five goals that guide our mission-driven work. In this spirit, we have identified five strategic priorities for Newton Country Day athletics—each one a vital strand in the VINES that connect sport to the education of the whole person. Together, these commitments reflect a holistic and complete vision for growth: strengthening our foundation, elevating our programs, and deepening our alignment with the Sacred Heart mission.
1. CULTIVATING Coaching Excellence (Fierce)
We invest in great coaches to build great teams.
- Recruit mission-aligned coaches with competitive experience. Prioritize hiring experienced, expert coaches across all levels who model fierce dedication to growth and excellence. Naming a strong program leader head coach on the varsity team in each sport supports alignment across JV and Middle School levels, elevating the program as a whole. Years 1-2.
- Create a comprehensive coach development pathway. Establish a structured onboarding program and adopt a Coaching Competency Framework to guide knowledge, leadership, and character development. Incorporate mid- and post-season evaluations to foster confident, courageous reflection and continuous growth. Year 1.
- Strengthen on-campus coaching pipelines and faculty collaboration. Growing the number of teacher-coaches and internal faculty liaisons to better integrate academics, spirituality, and athletics will reinforce the Sacred Heart mission and strengthen team culture. Years 1-2.
- Support ongoing professional learning. Encourage coaches to pursue annual professional development in areas such as sport expertise, adolescent development, and Sacred Heart values—ensuring they are prepared to support the whole girl. Years 2-3.
- Build a best-in-class athletics department structure. In order to best support coaches and athletes, cultivate a high-performing, fully staffed athletics administrative team, attracting, growing, and retaining the best full-time professionals who will provide expert leadership, support, and resources for coaches and athletes. Years 2-3.

2. Building Formational Team Culture (Formational)
We believe that team culture should shape hearts, not just outcomes.
- Celebrate athletic excellence with more community-wide events like National Signing Day, National Girls & Women in Sports Day, White Out, and Blue-Silver Day. These joyful events involve families while inspiring fierce pride and formational gratitude. Years 1-2.
- Deepen Sacred Heart Network connections through competitions, projects, and exchanges. Formational sport is strengthened by the spiritual and global community. Years 1-2.
- Conduct team trips for training and competition where our teams will spend more quality time together to sharpen both sport skills and community affiliation. Going away for short trips is a proven way to deepen relationships and broaden competition. Years 1-2.
- Design a Leadership Curriculum for Captains centered on empathy, inclusion, and courageous conflict resolution. Formational leadership begins with confident student-athletes. Years 1-2.
- Re-establish an Athletics Hall of Fame. Honoring alumni role models inspires courageous goals and reinforces fierce legacy and identity while promoting alumnae engagement and development opportunities. Years 3-4.
3. ADVANCING Facilities & Resources (confidence)
We match our athletes’ ambitions with the space, tools, and tech they need to grow.
- Prioritize construction of a turf field to support fierce competition and reliable year-round play. Athletes grow in confidence when they can train consistently and perform at their best. Years 1-2.
- Expand use of the Daly Rink and boathouse to elevate the experience of athletes, coaches, and fans year-round. Adding indoor turf to the rink and dryland training equipment to the boathouse will support offseason training and fun, team-building experiences—even in inclement weather. Years 2-3.
- Explore enhancements to our on-campus facilities. Investing in team spaces like locker rooms, seating, and signage fosters pride, professionalism, and fierce team identity. Years 2-3.
- Invest in technological performance tools (video analysis, sports psychology, strength & conditioning). Data-driven feedback builds athlete confidence and competitive edge both physically and mentally. Years 2-3.
- Strengthen facility partnerships to ensure access without costly construction, coaching expertise, increased revenue, sport instruction, and community exposure. Strategic collaboration supports program growth while fostering community confidence and visibility. Years 3-4.

4. STRENGTHENING Communication & COMMUNITY (COURAGE)
Clear expectations and open dialogue foster stronger teams and braver athletes.
- Introduce a centralized communications platform where coaches, athletes, families, and administrators can safely and effectively share information and easily view calendar activities. Years 1-2.
- Update Athletics Policy Handbooks to further define expectations and policies. This builds trust, simplifies logistics, and empowers families to be confidently engaged. Year 1.
- Expand online presence for athletics. An increased online presence allows our athletics department to further celebrate student-athletes, strengthen community engagement, and showcase program success to a wider audience with recruitment potential. Year 2.
- Launch Team Culture Charters co-created each season between coaches and athletes. This collaboration builds confident ownership and formational values between coaches and athletes from the first team meeting. Years 1-2.
- Provide off-season play opportunities (open gym, training sessions) to support passion-driven engagement. These opportunities foster consistent growth and community. Years 1-2.
5. Promoting Wellness, access, and joy (fun)
We make room for joy, balance, and belonging in every season of sport.
- Launch and manage an Athlete Placement Portal (APP) to identify and guide exceptionally talented 8th-grade athletes toward appropriate opportunities to participate on varsity teams. This process supports the unique needs and growth opportunities of each student, ensuring developmentally appropriate athletic challenges and guidance. Years 1-2.
- Launch community engagement activities at sporting events—theme nights, pep squads, student-led cheering sections—that boost school spirit and emphasize the fun and belonging in being a Falcon. Examples include the Winter White Out, Falcon Fest, and Spring Blue-Silver Day. Years 1-2.
- Collaborate with the Health & Wellness staff to offer a holistic Athlete’s Toolkit (mental health, nutrition, strength, recovery). Athletes will build confident, courageous, formational habits that last beyond high school. Years 2-3.
- Investigate ways to incorporate instructional physical activity and sport development into the school experience. This continues to educate the whole child while creating a more formal pipeline for successful sport programs. Years 3-4.
- Implement a Student-Athlete-to-College Initiative with College Counseling. Courageous, confident decision-making about the future begins with informed, timely support. Years 1-2.

Just as VINES are nurtured to grow strong and fruitful, so too are our student-athletes shaped through intentional, mission-driven athletic experiences. Through this strategic plan, Newton Country Day reaffirms its belief that sport—rooted in faith and community—can transform lives, foster resilience, and deepen the Sacred Heart mission. These INTERTWINING VINES will carry us forward.
