Mission and Ministry Parent/Caregiver Book Circle (virtual): Wednesdays (3/26, 4/2, 4/9, 4/16) from 12:30-1:30pm
Join with other parents and caregivers to mark the season of Lent by participating in a virtual small group discussion to read, reflect and build community together. Celebrating the theme Pope Francis has given to the jubilee year: Pilgrims of Hope, we will be reading weekly short essays written by spiritual author Laura Kelly Fanucci. She writes, "I find myself drawn to spiritual practices for ordinary days, not only mountaintop moments. I want to know what it means to pilgrimage as a way of life—to wake up seeking, to set out searching, to find God in the most unexpected places with the least likely people, and then to come home changed." Subscribe to her Substack, The Holy Labor, to receive the weekly essays beginning on Mar. 8, which will then form the basis of our virtual discussions. Space is limited. In order to foster community, we ask participants to be present for all of the virtual sessions. Sign up here.

Spring Family Conferences: Fri. Apr. 4 from 10am - 4pm (No Classes)
Each student in grades 5-11 will join their advisor/TAG leader and parent/caregiver(s) for a 30-minute conference. Families will receive an email to sign-up for conferences using Veracross during the first week of March.

Absence Policy
If a student is going to be absent or tardy, parents should notify the school before 9am via the Veracross Parent Portal or by calling the Academic Office directly: MS: (617) 559-4750, US: (617) 559-4747.

Lateness Policy
If a student arrives late to school (after 7:45am for MS, 7:55am for US), she is to report immediately to either the MS Academic Office, or to the Front Desk if in the US, to be recorded present before going to class. Late arrivals may only be excused by a note from a medical professional.

Early Dismissal Policy
Students may not leave before the end of the school day without permission from a parent/caregiver. Any student who has an appointment that necessitates being dismissed early must have this information noted either by her parents entering it directly via the Veracross Parent Portal or by calling the Academic Office directly: MS: (617) 559-4750, US: (617) 559-4747. Students must sign out at the Front Desk when they leave. Please make every effort to align early dismissal times with the end of class period time to reduce distraction to classroom learning.

Please Refrain from Front Desk Drop-Offs
We kindly ask MS parents to refrain from dropping off items for their children during the school day. This policy is intended to minimize classroom disruptions and promote personal responsibility among our students. Please ensure your child arrives at school with everything she needs for the day, including her athletic attire or uniform, water bottle, homework, and any other necessary materials for class. Additionally, MS students are not permitted to retrieve items from the front desk until the end of the school day. Thank you for your understanding and support.

New After-School Elective: Hip-Hop Dance Class!
Get ready to move! We’re excited to introduce a new MS after-school elective: Hip-Hop Dance! Classes will take place from 4:30-5:30pm, two days a week (Mondays and Thursdays) starting after Spring Break. This high-energy class will teach students the fundamentals of hip-hop movement, rhythm, and choreography in a fun and supportive environment. Students will learn a dance piece that will be performed at the Spring Soiree in May. Any questions, please reach out to Dr. Tully.

Grade 5 Voyagers Excursion to Codman Community Farms and Whole Foods Market: Wed. Mar. 5
As part of their Wellness and Dance curricula, 5th grade Voyagers will travel to Codman Community Farms and Whole Foods Market to connect food sources and production to bodily health, flexibility, and endurance. Students should wear waterproof footwear and dress appropriately for the weather, as parts of the day will be spent outdoors.

Grade 8 Capstone Showcase: Tue. Apr. 15 from 5:30-7pm
Grade 8 students will present their Capstone Projects on the evening of Tue. Apr. 15. These projects, inspired by the Goals, curriculum, and the students’ own interests, represent many hours of independent work over the course of the school year. The Capstone Presentations will take place on the 3rd floor in the MS. Parents/caregivers, students, and faculty/staff are invited to attend.

MS After School Program
The MS After-School Program is available for all students until 5:30pm each day. Students who take the Boston or MetroWest buses will be supervised until bus departure. Students should be picked up within 15 minutes of the end of the school day, or directly after school activities (sports or musical). Any student unattended for more than 15 minutes after school/sports/musical dismissal is expected to sign in to the After-School Program on the third floor. Once a MS student leaves campus at the end of the day, the assumption is that she has left campus for the day. Please remember to text the After-School number (617) 631-0535 when you arrive to pick up your child. Please reach out to Ms. Kumi, the director of our After-School Program, at x4909 with questions.

School the World - Summer Service Trips
Many Newton Country Day students have partnered with School the World, a Boston-based non-profit organization that seeks to transform global poverty by providing access to education in Central America. School the World is currently recruiting volunteers for summer trips to Honduras and Guatemala. On Mar. 25, they are hosting an information session at Brookline Village Public Library. Please note that participation in a service trip with School the World is an excellent way for rising 11th graders to complete the Hesed project! For more information, please contact Dr. Potter at x4757.

Hesed (Class of 2027): Project Proposals due July 1
In January, sophomores received an introduction to the Hesed Project, a required 40-hour community service commitment that is integrated into the Religion 11 curriculum. Students are strongly advised to complete these projects during the summer prior to junior year. Given the considerable commitment of time that Hesed entails, spring semester is a good time to reach out to service agencies to begin planning a schedule that is compatible with your family’s summer plans. The deadline for summer service project proposals (or a deferral to complete Hesed during the school year) is July 1. See a general overview of the Hesed program and its requirements. Students have access to more resources via Google Classroom. If there are any questions please contact Dr. Potter at x4757.

Juniors:

  • Most juniors have already had their first appointments with a member of the College Guidance team; any juniors who have not yet done so should schedule an appointment as soon as possible. We encourage each junior to conduct some initial college research over Spring Vacation, which may include “virtual visits” if in-person visiting is not possible. Junior parents and caregivers are welcome to call the College Guidance office throughout the rest of the semester. We are happy to answer your questions over the phone or meet with you (via Google Meet or in person) in the months ahead.
  • College Guidance uses Naviance to manage the college application process. Each junior has been given a username and a password and is expected to log onto the Naviance system to refine their list of “colleges I am thinking about” as they research. We rely on the Naviance program to help manage both the research and application process and have found it to be very efficient and helpful to both students and parents.
  • Parents and students can follow this timeline to access resources and deadlines by following the Timeline: The College Application Process, Jan '25 to May '26.

Seniors:

  • Most regular decision results will be coming out in the next few weeks. Please know that we are available to help students and their families talk through some of the decisions ahead.
  • Students/families are advised to reach out directly to each college’s office of financial aid if they have FAFSA questions.
